Jay-Z, Kanye Watch The Throne Tour: Reviews Are In!
Oct 31st 2011, 12:56

Jay and Kanye's WTT Tour opening in Atlanta did not disappoint. By Rob Markman

Jay-Z and Kanye West appear to have another hit on their hands. Musically, the two titans have accomplished just about all there is — #1 LPs, top Billboard singles, Grammys, gold and platinum plaques, and high-grossing world tours. So when the pair embarked on their Watch the Throne Tour as an official duo, the expectations were no doubt high.

The reviews are in, and with its grandiose stage design, ginormous set list and striking onstage chemistry, it is clear that the Watch the Throne Tour does not disappoint. After two dates in Atlanta, Georgia (the tour's opening October 28 date and another the very next night), the critics sung the two rap heroes an overwhelming praise.

You've already read what MTV News and DJ Green Lantern had to say about it, now see what others thought about Jay-Z and Kanye West's regal run.

"Many in the high-energy crowd remained standing — and swaying and dancing and singing — for the entire 2½-hour show. At one point, as Jay-Z and West performed 'N---as in Paris' from their hit Watch the Throne CD, West exhorted the audience to 'Bounce! Bounce!' The resulting stomping had Philips Arena rocking and shaking in a way that it hasn't for the Hawks in a long time." — USA Today

"The Watch the Throne concert totally surpassed anything you would expect. From the 50-foot cubes, to the laser show and spectacular visuals, and in-and-out mini sets, the pair moved like a duo that has performed consistently for years." — AllHipHop.com

"Their enjoyment sharing the stage was obvious as they led the crowd through the refrain of 'Run This Town' and chanted over the heavy, chest-rattling bass in 'Monster' as more video of wild animals played behind them." — Atlanta Journal-Constitution

"The kings of hip-hop, Jay-Z and Kanye West, descended upon on Atlanta on Friday and Saturday nights to begin their Watch the Throne tour reign and the two couldn't have been more regal during their performances." — XXLMag.com

"While there was virtually no way a concert featuring Jay-Z and Kanye West could ever be a dud, we have to say the duo lived up to our high expectations with last night's kick-off of their Watch the Throne tour. The hip-hop monarchs performed at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, with an epic set list that featured selections from each artist's own behemoth catalog of hits as well as their Watch the Throne collaborations." — Idolator

Demi Lovato, Kelly Clarkson Reveal Halloween Plans
Oct 31st 2011, 10:53

'A pirate or Ke$ha ... they're one in the same," Lovato jokes. By Christina Garibaldi

It's Halloween, a favorite time of the year when you can dress up as someone (or something) entirely different from yourself. Some will take the scary route, some will dress up in a sexy costume, and others might transform themselves into their favorite celebrity.

So, what are some of the biggest pop stars doing to celebrate the big day? When MTV News caught up with Demi Lovato, she told us about her Halloween plans.

"I think I'm going to dress up, but I think I'm just going to pass out candy," Lovato said.

And it seems the Unbroken singer can't decide what she will be. "I think I'm going to be a pirate or Ke$ha — two similar options; they're one in the same," she joked.

It sounds like Lovato's trick-or-treaters are in for something special. Yet, not everyone has a costume in mind. When Kelly Clarkson stopped by MTV News on Friday, she was still unsure what she was going to be this Halloween.

"I think we are going to be in Cologne, Germany," Clarkson said. "We'll probably find a bar somewhere and dress up stupid. Our schedule's been so busy, we kind of forgot that it's happening. We'll all dress up; we're all pretty game for stuff like that."

And Clarkson wasn't kidding. The Stronger singer seems up for just about anything: Just ask about her favorite Halloween memory.

"I didn't know I was supposed to dress up for something at work — this was years ago — and I ended up going to Wal-Mart," Clarkson revealed. "The only thing they had left was a XXXL cow costume, and it had udders that were dragging on the floor. It was really gross and awesome."

'Walking Dead' Creator Robert Kirkman: Shane Changes The Game
Oct 31st 2011, 10:53

'Shane's presence radically alters a lot of different things,' says Kirkman, addressing the murder of a long-lasting character from the comics. By Josh Wigler

Jon Bernthal as Shane Walsh in "The Walking Dead" Photo: AMC

Jon Bernthal, who stars on "The Walking Dead" as the disgruntled Shane Walsh, ended last week's episode with his back against a wall, zombies literally nipping at his heels and no allies in sight, save for an overweight burden named Otis (Pruitt Taylor Vince) — the same man who accidentally shot Carl (Chandler Riggs) during a hunting accident gone wrong. Their mission to find medical supplies critical to Carl's surgery was all but doomed, but Shane found a way to survive — it's just a shame the same can't be said for Otis.

In order to flee an oncoming horde of flesh-hungry walkers, Shane shot Otis in the leg and abandoned him on the street after a violent scuffle, distracting the undead army with a hefty human meal as he escaped with his life intact. As a result, Shane made it back to Hershel's farm in time to bring the necessary tools for Carl's surgery, but not without sacrificing a huge chunk of his humanity in the process.

Shane's decision to murder Otis to save Carl's life (not to mention his own) is certainly a divisive one, but you can't say Bernthal didn't warn you about his character's dark turn.

"[Shane has figured out that] things like guilt, shame and trying to do things that are morally right are far less important and really have no place in this new world compared to surviving and doing what you have to do to stay alive and protect the people you love," the actor previously told MTV News. "If you're with a group of people and you're trying to survive and one person is holding you back or slowing you down, in this world, the right thing to do is to help that person and bring them along. In [the world of 'The Walking Dead'], the right thing to do is to kill that person and send them away."

Killing Otis certainly lives up to that philosophy, if nothing else. But the character's death is controversial for another important reason: Though he only appeared in two episodes of "The Walking Dead," Otis is alive for more than 20 issues in the comic book series created by Robert Kirkman. His death proves that the television series is more than willing to veer away from Kirkman's source material — and it's largely a result of the continued survival of Shane, who is dead in the comic books during the Hershel's farm story.

"Shane's presence in the show in general is one of the things that excites me the most about working on the TV show, because to a certain extent, I've told these stories before and I did them my own way in the comic book," Kirkman, who executive-produces "Walking Dead," told MTV News. "I work on the TV show, I'm in the writers room, and it's fun for me to look at it as a do-over. I can fiddle with things. I can play George Lucas, if you will, and I can think, 'Well, what would happen if Shane had lived? How would that change things?' "

Otis learned the hard way just how much can change because of Shane's stay of execution, and Kirkman teased that the deadly changes are far from over.

"Shane's presence radically alters a lot of different things," he warned. "Seeing how things are changed by his presence moving through the second season is a lot of fun for me. It ends up bringing in a lot of interesting twists and turns as you'll see from watching the season."

Are you surprised by Shane's actions? Let us know in the comments!

Taio Cruz Reveals Craziest 'Hangover' Moment
Oct 31st 2011, 10:53

TY.O single inspired by a trip to Ibiza, Spain, singer tells MTV News. By James Cantiello

Taio Cruz is not a binge drinker; he just plays one on TV.

In Cruz's playful new single, "Hangover," he croons lines like, "I got a hangover/ I got an empty cup/ Pour me some more." The accompanying music video is a rambunctious spin on the 2009 hit movie of the same name: Taio wakes up with a foggy memory, only to slowly recall the zany alcohol-fueled antics of his entourage the night before.

But the multitalented electro-pop star insists he imbibes the sauce very rarely. "I have to be honest: I really don't drink that much. I really don't. Seriously, I don't," he told MTV News.

" 'Hangover' was inspired by me being in Ibiza this year," he continued. "We had a whole week of going out and it being crazy, even though I didn't actually get drunk myself, but everyone around me was getting completely smashed. I felt like, 'We need to create an anthem for them. That would be fun.' "

Thus, the immortal lyric "I can drink until I throw up" was born.

Despite a drier-than-expected lifestyle, Cruz admitted he enjoys unleashing his inner Snooki every now and then.

"I have had the odd occasion where it's gotten a bit crazy, and it's always in Ibiza, [Spain]. For me, I think my craziest moment was in Ibiza at a bar with a couple girls on me, piggybacked whilst behind the bar making drinks. I remember that was a bit of a crazy evening," he reminisced.

The Dr. Luke-produced "Hangover" is the first single off Taio's new album, TY.O, due out in early 2012. He'll head overseas for the MTV EMA to promote his European single, the Swedish House Mafia collaboration "Troublemaker," and is also launching a line of Rokstarr watches.

In other words, Taio Cruz is far too busy to nurse any hangovers.

'Twilight' super-fans tell us what they're expecting from exclusive clip and live Q&A on Thursday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV. By Kara Warner

We can hardly contain our "Twilight"-obsessed excitement for Thursday, November 3, at 7:56 p.m. ET when we will premiere a never-before-released clip from the hugely anticipated "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" live on-air, to be introduced by megastars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

This extra-special event is "MTV First: Breaking Dawn - Part 1," which is an opportunity for us to provide our fellow "Twilight" fans with some insider excitement surrounding the impending release of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1," due November 18, and catch up with the three actors following the clip's debut on MTV.com.

To get a feel for what members of the "Twilight" fandom hope to hear or see next week, MTV News sought out the expertise of Laura Byrne-Cristiano, who owns TwilightLexicon.com; Kara Hassell of TwilightersAnonymous.com; and Kallie Mathews from TwilightSeriesTheories.com.

In the exclusive clip, Byrne-Cristiano and Mathews hope to see some reactions to Bella's pregnancy from the wolf pack, while Hassell hopes more humans are involved.

"I love the Cullens and werewolves as much as the next 'Twilight' fan, but I'm dying to see a little snark from Charlie Swan (Billy Burke) or Jessica Stanley (Anna Kendrick)," Hassell said.

The ladies are also eager to see the dynamic between Stewart, Pattinson and Lautner during the MTV.com Q&A following the premiere of the clip.

"I hope and expect to see some great chemistry and a lot of comedy from the three," Hassell said. "We've seen them individually in interviews recently, but it's always a whole different ballgame when they are all together."

"I would really love to hear them discuss acting together, i.e. when Jacob finds out that Bella is preggers," Mathews added. "And what it was like to play off of each other's emotions in such an intense scene."

"[I would like to know] what scene are they the proudest of that they took part in," Byrne-Cristiano said. "In terms of end result on film."

Continuing with the theme of patiently waiting and eager anticipation, how are our dedicated experts preparing for the film's opening day and making the wait less painful?

"I'm so busy grabbing every interview and news story. It takes my mind off of it," Byrne-Cristiano said. "Plus, we are planning this big private movie showing for our fans in the Nashville area, so I've been really busy with that."

"I have re-watched each of the first three films, and I have the soundtracks on repeat in my car!" Hassell admitted.

"I am planning to be at the premiere with the rest of the fans!" Mathews said. "We are also giving away a ton of 'Twilight' merchandise at TwilightSeriesTheories.com leading up to the release. I will stay very busy!"

Don't forget: Fans can get in on our interviews with Stewart, Pattinson and Lautner by submitting video or text questions via MTV.com or Twitter (using @MTVNews, plus the hashtags #AskTwilight and #MTVFirst).

Be sure to tune in to "MTV First: Breaking Dawn - Part 1," which kicks off Thursday, November 3, on MTV at 7:56 p.m, followed by a Q&A with Kristen, Rob and Taylor on MTV.com!

Justin Bieber's 'Mistletoe' Co-Star Dishes About Kiss

Ali Williams calls smooch 'very professional' in video for first single from Under the Mistletoe, which drops Tuesday. By Jocelyn Vena

In the time since Justin Bieber dropped his "Mistletoe" video, his leading lady, Ali Williams, explains that things have been a little different for her. The18-year-old college freshman is still reeling from the experience and all the attention she's been getting.

"My friends were freaking out a little more than I was," Williams dished to MTV News. "I wasn't really prepared for all the stuff that was happening. I think that pretty much everyone has been pretty supportive. There's some things out there that are untrue, just as far as my age and stuff, but everyone has been really nice and supportive about that."

The big role came after a last-minute email from her agent about the audition. And while director Roman White and his crew kept the project pretty secretive at the audition, Williams used context clues and research to figure out she might be starring in a Bieber video. Eventually, she landed the gig, and the day before the Nashville-area September shoot, she learned who the video was for.

"I definitely admire him. He's very successful in what he's doing. I wasn't too familiar with his music, but I was very excited to meet him, and I'm glad that I did," she confessed.

"He was really nice. He was a good person. I heard that he was a nice guy, just from what you read in magazines and stuff, so I wasn't really worried about meeting him. He was ... really easy to get along with, really polite. As far as the kissing, it was very professional. It's just a job."

She said she hopes the video opens doors for her as she continues to pursue an acting career while also attending Nashville's Belmont University, where she's studying journalism.

"I was really happy about [the video]. I think it was edited well, and it all came together. I really liked it," she said. "I would definitely say this is one of my favorite jobs I've done so far. Overall, I just thought the whole set was a lot of fun 'cause they made it look exactly like Christmas, and they have fake snow and everything.

"It looked really good, and it was weird because it was 75 degrees outside, and we had Santa and snow. It was really good, and it was fun."

"Mistletoe" is the lead single off Under the Mistletoe. The album, which drops Tuesday, features Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, Usher, Busta Rhymes and the Band Perry.

Self-Publishing Moves into the Mainstream

The idea that The Bookseller magazine, that venerable trade organ for the traditional publishing process, would dedicate four pages of editorial for a "Flagship Feature" on self-publishing would have been unthinkable even a short time ago, but that is what happened at the end of last week Bookseller. The very suggestion of people publishing their own books has in the past brought forth patronising smirks at best, and howls of derision at worst, from those who believed such things should be left to the professionals.
All that has now changed and leading the charge is Alison Baverstock, (the author of the Bookseller feature), with the publication of her guide to self-publishing The Naked Author.
It would be hard to overstate what a seismic change in attitude this represents. Self-publishing does not in any way threaten the livelihoods of the existing publishing businesses that are able to add value for their customers in matters of packaging, distribution and marketing, but it does mean that a whole new cottage industry has been allowed to spring up and is now thriving thanks to a variety of factors coming together at the same time.
The Naked Author is an absolute milestone in this exciting journey.
